Choosing Photos For Your Website

By: admin16 | January 29, 2015

surprised-man Images have a profound impact on a website’s appeal, credibility and selling power. Effective imagery can:

  • direct interest to certain parts of your website
  • illustrate complex ideas
  • demonstrate product features
  • increase product sales

This article will explain how to use stock and custom photography to take your website to the next level.

A Quick Note on Copyrights

Just because you can easily download an image from the internet doesn’t mean it’s free. Nearly all images are subject to copyright laws, and using someone else’s images without permission can get you into legal trouble.  Don’t risk of a lawsuit.  Take your own photos, purchase stock photos, hire a photographer, unless you have permission from the copyright holder.

Now, on to the good stuff…

Stock Photos

An easy way to get photos and avoid legal trouble is to use stock photography.  Websites like istockphoto.com allow you to purchase Royalty-Free photos for your website.

Stock photos are a great way to get good quality imagery at a relatively low price. Good stock photos can illustrate a point and draw attention to certain areas of your page.

Here’s a common mistake. A website owner says “I want to make sure people read this part, so I’ll make it big and red so they can’t miss it.”  The strange thing is, people often miss it even more!  The reason? People have been trained to assume bold aggressive type is advertising, so the ignore it.

There are many ways to draw attention to certain elements on your page but for the average person a well chosen stock photo can be the easiest way to bring attention.

For example:  Let’s say you want to call attention to a contest you’re having for a trip to Hawaii.  Using a beautiful photo of a Hawaiian beach would be a great way to call attention to the contest.  Other concepts may be more abstract but well chosen images can make a world of difference.

Hiring a Photographer

The right photo can tell the story of your business.  Every business has a story.  It’s who you are as a company.

When you need custom images and professional quality, a skilled photographer can do wonders for your website (and the rest of your advertising materials). Good photos will improve the look of your website and instill confidence in you as a company. Dark, blurry, or noisy photos will detract from your product or service. Hiring a good photographer will give an air of sophistication and cast a good light on your product.

If you want to hire a photographer, try searching the internet. Here are some recommended search terms:

  • Commercial Photographer
  • Architectural and Real Estate Photographer
  • Food Photographer
  • Portrait Photographer

Try typing in the name of your city or area as part of the search, to find a photographer in your area. For example:

Commercial Photographer Austin, Texas
or
Food Photographer Danbury, Ct.

Be Unique

While a generic stock image is better than nothing. Taking time to find the right image (or have it created) will take your website to the next level and help you stand out from the crowd.
The best photos convey an idea, tell a story, or illustrate usefulness. Learning to use images to communicate is a valuable skill that will allow your company to be successful in the 21st Century.
